Defeating Temptation:
Biblical Secrets to Self-Control

Bible-based book on temptation with advice for individuals, couples,
small groups, cell groups and adult Sunday school classes

Note: This book is out-of-print. It is being updated and revised. The new version will be available late 2016.

We all are engaged in a struggle between flesh and Spirit.
Regardless of who we are or how old we are, this is true. We may be an alcoholic, be "addicted" to the Internet, watch or read pornography, gossip, gamble, waste time, shoplift, flirt, tell lies, watch too much TV, smoke, overspend, get drunk, overeat, cheat on income taxes, engage in sexual sins, experience alcoholism or alcohol abuse, suffer from drug abuse, explode in anger or suffer from other "addictions." Whether our temptations are "minor" or life dominating, one thing is certain—we have them.

You already know how hard it is to resist temptation, living a life of self-control, and how discouraging it is to fail again and again. You aren't alone. No one, other than Jesus, has lived a sinless life.

But this doesn't mean the struggle against sin is hopeless, that you might as well give up. When you study this book, you will see that the Bible, God'’s word, provides practical tools to help you in your struggle to overcome the major sins in your life. You will see how to become increasingly self-controlled. Even if your life has seemed completely without self discipline, you can change with God’'s help.
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
A special word of encouragement: If you have pleaded for years for God’'s help without growing in self-control, your problem may not be a lack of prayer, but rather a lack of knowledge about how to resist temptation. As you study, you will discover that you can grow in self discipline and experience the joy that comes from victory over sin.

This book is designed for individual or group study. A 12-week study schedule is outlined at the beginning of the book. Those interested in a more intensive study can double the time to 24 weeks.

Each chapter is interactive, with personal application questions scattered throughout to help you put its biblical advice into practice. The book is comprehensive and detailed, yet easy to use and practical.

"At Teen Challenge, where we routinely deal with life and death crisis issues in men’'s and women’'s lives, the curriculum we use must be Scriptural, stated simply and directly, but powerful in its impact upon people’s lives. That describes 'Defeating Temptation' and all of Doug Britton’'s books we have used. Our staff members have benefited greatly by them in their Christian walk and ministry as well as the men and women we help."
— Dick Rhoads, Executive Director, Sacramento Valley (California) Teen Challenge

"If a pastor in our district commits a sexual sin, one of the first things we have him or her do as part of the rehabilitation process is to study Doug Britton's "Defeating Temptation: Biblical Secrets to Self-Control." This book helps pastors and others deal with—and overcome—any underlying issues, and it provides practical, biblical tools to help them overcome temptation and walk in purity. I heartily recommend this invaluable resource."
— Jim Braddy, Superintendent, Assemblies of God, Northern California/Nevada

"If you want to live a victorious Christian life, read Doug Britton'’s ‘Defeating Temptation.’ It covers everything, from preventive steps to spiritual warfare to practical steps to seek God’'s help. The format and structure have made it a great resource for my sermon preparation, Bible studies, and personal life."
— Jeff Bernal, Associate Pastor, First Baptist Church, Benson, Arizona

"This book has been well received and highly embraced by both men and women at Capital Christian Center. I highly recommend it for anyone desiring to overcome temptation and gain self-control in any area of their lives. It is totally Bible-based with practical guidelines that work!"
— Joanne Cole, Pastor, Women’s Ministries, Capital Christian Center, Sacramento,

"I have used ‘Defeating Temptation’ in a men'’s weekly Bible study and as a resource for a sermon series on the temptation of Jesus. I really like its specific, biblical advice and practical worksheets. (The men enjoyed the study. They kept coming back for a year!)"
— Marvin E. Barbee, Senior Pastor, First Assembly of God, Clearlake, California

"Doug builds on the premise that anyone can defeat temptation—if he or she knows how to fight. When our district office staff used this book for an in-house Bible study, both men and women reported benefiting tremendously. This book has hundreds of tools from God's Word that will help you know the freedom that comes from defeating temptation."
— Steve Brown, Former District Administrator, NCN HonorBound Men's Ministries

"Easy to understand, Biblical, and encouraging. Would make an excellent textbook for any discipleship program."
— Lee Reeves, Teen Challenge, Phoenix, Arizona
