Marriage by the Book — For Couples and Small Groups
What is Marriage by the Book?
“Marriage by the Book” is an eight-book Bible-based series covering every aspect of marriage. The books originally were part of a book written in 1993 by biblical Marriage and Family Therapist Doug Britton. They were expanded into the eight-book “Marriage by the Book” series in 1997. Each of the eight books has been updated and extensively rewritten for publication in 2017.
Each book in this multicultural series helps individuals and couples turn to God and shows them how to apply the Bible’s truths in their marriage. They are for every kind of marriage — old to young, great to not-so-great.
These books are ideal for —
- Small groups
- Church classes
- Pastors and mentors
- Pre-marriage ministries
- Marriage counselors
Author and Bible-based Marriage and Family Therapist Doug Britton has helped hundreds of thousands of people as a therapist, clinical director of a treatment center, seminar speaker, radio co-host, and author of over twenty books. In each book of the “Marriage by the Book” series, Doug draws upon his extensive experience counseling married couples. More importantly, he goes directly to the Bible and applies its truth and wisdom to problems couples face today.
Marriage by the Book Is —
- Bible-based. Every chapter shows couples how to apply a specific biblical truth to their marriage.
- Multicultural. The Bible-based truths apply to every group and culture.
- Reader-friendly. Many techniques — from a simple, straightforward writing style to breaking the text into small, easily digested portions — make the books easy to read.
- Practical. Readers are given clear, practical steps they can take.
- Comprehensive. The books cover all the key issues of marriage. Numerous questions and dilemmas are anticipated and answered.
- Interactive. Personal application questions throughout the books get readers involved.
- Action-oriented. Readers write action plans as they go through each chapter.
Each Book in the “Marriage by the Book” Series is Three-in-one
There’s no need to buy a separate book, workbook, and leader’s guide for each study. Every book in the “Marriage by the Book” series already includes these three important components —
- A book — with practical, Bible-based information.
- A workbook — with “Make it personal” questions scattered throughout each chapter.
- A small group leader’s guide — with guidelines for small group leaders and chapter-by-chapter discussion questions at the back of each book.
Two Cover Sets Are Available
The eight books in “Marriage by the Book” are available in two cover sets — Multicultural or African-American. (The inside pages are identical.)
Read On Your Own
Join thousands of couples who have strengthened their marriages when they read “Marriage by the Book.” Whether your marriage needs a major overhaul or a minor tuneup, you and your spouse will find your marriage improving as you read and discuss the Bible-based guidelines in these pages.
Study even if your spouse does not. These books can make a major difference in your marriage even if your spouse does not join you in reading them. God can perform miracles in your personal life — and in your marriage — as you learn how to be the best spouse possible.
You will recognize yourselves as you read. These books are not just theory. They are based on Doug Britton’s experience counseling around one thousand married couples. Typical problems and questions are anticipated and answered.
Each book is interactive. “What do you think” and “Make it personal” questions scattered throughout each chapter do not simply ask you to summarize what you have read. They help you relate the material to your marriage and make action plans.
Start a Small Group or Marriage Ministry
Join the thousands of couples who have studied “Marriage by the Book” in small groups to strengthen and enrich their marriages. You can use these books for small-group studies, or you can use them as part of a more extensive marriage ministry in your church.
Start a Small Group
You can easily start a small group study using “Marriage by the Book.” Each book has a small group leader’s guide and suggested discussion questions at the back of the book.
Using the small group guidelines and chapter-by-chapter discussion questions in each book, you will find it easy to help couples improve strong marriages and strengthen troubled marriages.
You can study one or more books, or you can go through all eight. They are perfect for a one-year small group study or adult Sunday school class. (Since each book has six chapters, at the rate of one chapter per week it would take forty-eight weeks to study all eight books.) Many groups extend this a few months so they can can take more than one week to discuss chapters the group finds especially relevant.
Looking for more help in leading a small group? Although each book in the “Marriage by the Book” series includes a small group leader’s guide and chapter-by-chapter group discussion questions, you may want a more in-depth leader’s guide. How to Lead a Christ-Centered Small Group will help you with detailed guidelines for starting and leading small groups. Plus, it answers common questions such as how to deal with —
- Someone who criticizes his or her spouse
- Someone who gets off the subject
- Someone who offers simplistic advice
- Someone who remains silent
- Someone who levels angry attacks
Start a Marriage Ministry
Create a powerful marriage ministry using “Marriage by the Book.” When you use this eight-book series as the core curriculum, each member of your team reinforces the same messages.
For example, if a couple is in a small group and also meets with a marriage mentor, the small group leader and the mentor help the couple learn and practice the same Bible-based principles.
Mentoring becomes much more effective when mentors use “Marriage by the Book.” Instead of just talking about issues, mentors can ask couples to read a relevant chapter as homework, then when they meet help couples see how they can apply the insights and tools in the chapter.
